SERVICE PROJECTS
Soroptimist International of Garden Grove (SIGG) is a service organization committed to improving the lives of women and girls in our local community and throughout the world.
LOCAL COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES
· Women’s Opportunity Award – cash grant given annually to a woman head of household seeking to improve her economic status by gaining additional skills, training and education
· Violet Richardson Award – recognizes young women between the ages of 14 and 17 engaged in volunteer action within the community and/or their school
· Making a Difference for Women Award – recognizes a woman in the community who is improving the lives of women and girls personally, professionally, or through volunteerism.
· Soroptimists STOP Trafficking – SIGG partners with other area Soroptimist clubs and the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force to raise public awareness about the trafficking of women and girls, primarily for purposes of sexual exploitation.
· Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence – SIGG participates in this annual effort to raise awareness about domestic violence as a workplace concern by placing cards with local domestic violence hotline information in local businesses and public restrooms.

-Mary Nyanjega Academy Scholarship in Kenya · SIGG is sponsoring two girls to attend school in Nairobi, Kenya for a year. In 2006, SIGG’s contributions enabled the completion of a project to bring running water to the school.

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES ·
Global Fund for Afghanistan – For the last three years, SIGG has made a significant donation to this fund, earmarking the funds to plant orchards for cultivation by women heads of household in rural Afghanistan.

December 10th President’s Appeal – SIGG makes a financial donation each year to an international project selected by the Soroptimist International President. In 2007, SIGG donated $836 to
Restoring Dignity: Hamlin Fistula Relief and Aid Fund, partners with the Hamlin Fistula Relief and Aid Fund of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to provide ongoing medical care and training skills to women with fistulas that cannot be completely cured. More information is available on the SI web site at

Project Independence: Women Survivors of War – SIGG contributed financially to this four-year Soroptimist International Project, which provides financial subsistence, rights education, vocational training, and micro-credit loans to women survivors of war in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Rwanda. In 2005-06, members of SIGG corresponded with a group of 20 Project Independence participants in Bosnia, sending monthly letters of encouragement and support.

Project Sierra: A Family and a Future Project SIerra partners Soroptimist International with Hope and Homes for Children to transform the lives of some of the most deprived women and children in Sierra Leone by providing support to young mothers, assisting children living on the streets and working to assist the most vulnerable families in the country.
